28.October 2022 - 8.30 pm (CET) - Live at Masterlink, London

'Both Sides Now' | Joni reimagined' | ft. Mim Grey, Jo Harman, Mike Mayfield

A live-streamed concert in front of a VIP audience. Performed by Stefan Redtenbacher's Funkestra featuring vocalists MIM GREY, JO HARMAN and MIKE MAYFIELD.

Covering Joni Mitchell can be a journey full of potholes and missteps, but, equally, great songs are made to be revisited so the challenge is there to be had.

This particular journey started in a somewhat ad hoc fashion but, before anyone knew it, there was not only a bunch of instrumentals in the can but also a queue of A list vocalists (think the likes of Rumer, Hamish Stuart to mention but two) wanting to get involved. Hence it's looks like not one, but two albums (one instrumental and one of featured guest vocalists) may well be in the works!

In the meantime, 3 of the best vocalists in the business - Mim Grey (McCartney, Tom Jones, Brand New Heavies), Jo Harman (Duetted with Michael McDonald, Lamont Dozier) and Mike Mayfield (Ed Sheeran, Jessie J) join Redtenbacher's Funkestra, aka the Masterlink studio band, for a special live stream concert in front of a bespoke audience of about 30 people.

This exclusive full length concert takes place at the beautiful Surrey countryside location of Send Hill Studios - free parking on the site, too - where audience members can not just enjoy a 'front row' seat at this very special performance but also a 'behind the scenes' look of how these things work as it were, together, no doubt, with a meet and greet with the performers concerned. Jo Harman

Widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest ever soul/blues fuelled voices, JO HARMAN is an international touring and recording artist who remains a genre-defying, independently minded artist of rare credibility.

“Jo Harman is an incredibly believable and soulful singer…perhaps right now UK’s finest’  Chris Wells, Editor, Echoes

“Just Stunning” – Mail On Sunday

An artist who makes sincere and heartfelt music, The Mirror proclaimed her ‘UK’s finest female soul blues voice’ who, according to Classic Rock, writes ‘lip-bitingly beautiful songs’.

Mim Grey

Long-admired as a stellar UK vocal and songwriting talent, London-born Mim Grey has a deeply soulful voice and evocative tone. She sings the story of her life in the tradition of the classic songwriters.

“She's my favourite singer” - Sir Tom Jones

“The most beautiful voice to come out of the UK in a very long time” - Michael Ball

“She's rather good and rather gorgeous but don't let that influence you” - Robert Elms, BBC Radio London

Over the years, Mim has plied her trade with and for some of the best in the business.  Sir Paul McCartney is a fan and repeat offender when it comes to booking her for personal engagements.

As an in-demand stage and studio session vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for numerous international household names, her talent has no doubt embellished much of the sound that has permeated your ears, even co-writing songs for the likes of Kylie Minogue.

Her first two albums, Grey Matters and Chasing Tigers, were incredibly well received with mainstream radio support from the likes of Paul O'Grady, Sarah Kennedy, Robert Elms and the late Sir Terry Wogan asa Radio 2 play-listed artist and her forthcoming new material is sure to garner equally lofty support and acclaim.

In addition to her albums, Mim has enjoyed success with single releases, most notably ‘Just As You Are’ and ‘Ways Of Love’, with both achieving No.1 chart positions in the UK Country Charts. She also wrote and released the BBC Radio 2 play-listed 'Xmas Kiss' which made charts on both sides of the Atlantic and was featured in ‘Foster’, a film starring Richard E Grant and Toni Collette.

Mike Mayfield

Mike Mayfield is regarded as one the UK's foremost musicians. As a master of vocals, keyboards, bass and - famously - guitar, Mike is the go-to sideman of dozens of household named acts such as Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Rita Ora, Leone Lewis, Emeli Sande, Jamie Cullum, Ellie Goulding and Joss Stone, to name but a few.

In this capacity Mike has played some of the biggest arenas and appeared on major TV shows all over the world. Closer to home, Mike also produced Jo Harman's award winning debut record 'Dirt On My Tongue', co-writing many of the songs with his long time friend Jo across both of her studio albums.

With his soulful vocals and astonishing guitar playing, Mike has been in particularly high demand as a session musician, but his focus now is on producing his own original material, having already been invited to open for Paloma Faith in that capacity, with upcoming plans to record and release a debut album together with continuing his own headline touring and festival appearances this summer and beyond.

Redtenbacher’s Funkestra

The London based, multi-national, Redtenbacher’s Funkestra is the brainchild of bassist, composer and producer Stefan Redtenbacher. This original and mostly instrumental 'wall-to-wall' jazz funk collective of world class players has about 20 releases to their name and 5 million Spotify streams.

They have recorded with the 'who's who' from the international Jazz Funk and Fusion scene including legends like Fred Wesley, Alfred ‘Pee Wee’ Ellis from James Brown, Stephen ‘Doc’ Kupka, Lee Thornburg and Lenny Pickett from Tower of Power, Cory Wong (Vulfpeck), Eric Krazno (Lettuce), Stanton Moore (Galactic), drum virtuoso Benny Greb, Elliott Randall and Keith Carlock (Steely Dan), titanic saxophone players Rick Margitza (Miles Davis Band), Chris Hunter (Gil Evans Orchestra), Andy Snitzer (Paul Simon), Prince’s New Power Generation horn section (aka ‘The Hornheads’) and horn players from Incognito, Brand New Heavies and many more.

Their records have been released on Wooden Hat Records (USA), Pedigree Cuts/Universal (UK) and Stefan’s own label RSB Records. In the last 5 years they have clocked up an impressive 3 million plus (and rising) streams on Spotify only and their music has also been publicly performed by Big Bands in USA, Austria, Germany, Holland, Denmark and the UK.

Over the past two years the Funkestra rhythm section has also served as the studio house band for ‘The Masterlink Sessions’ and have fully embraced a broader range of styles, not least supporting a range of noted international vocalists. The has resulted in 50+ videos and album and EP recordings with US Grammy winner Mike Farris, Hamish Stuart (front man of the original ‘Pick Up The Pieces’ Average White Band, McCartney, Aretha, Chaka, Ringo Starr and many more), Sarah Jane Morris, Jo Harman, Australia's Georgia van Etten, Sam Tanner, Hollie Rogers, Jade Like The Stone, Portugal's Diana Silveira, Helena May, Orphy Robinson MBE, Laura Evans, Jools Holland vocalist Louise Marshall, Purdy, Connor Selby, Elles Bailey and many more.

The band has morphed, somewhat organically, into a zeitgeist equivalent of the legendary studio bands from Motown (Funkbrothers), Stax Records (Booker T & The MGs/Mar-Keys) and Muscle Shoals (‘The Swampers’) respectively, and are the studio/production house choice for very many respected artists at the elite end of the music business. With this, the band, whilst continuing to make their own successful records, has evolved into a highly respected mini-Nashville production house in the Surrey Hills, UK - a set up that seems destined to continue on an even larger scale as we move further into the new decade.

Masterlink

‘Live at Masterlink’ was born out of the ‘Masterlink Sessions’: invited guests performing 100% live in the studio with the studio house band beautifully filmed by videographer Leo Mansell from Shoot and Splice. Extended out from the series of popular videos the team have now expanded their offering by organising circa 20 min live-stream concerts, not only from the house band with their invited guests but also other artists and bands sharing the community values. This is our own spin on ‘Daryl’s House’ and ‘NPR Tiny Desk Concerts’ from leafy Surrey, Great Britain. The ‘Masterlink Sessions’ are a joint venture of Stefan Redtenbacher (Redtenbacher's Funkestra), James Welch (Masterlink Productions) and Leo Mansell (Shoot and Splice) to strengthen the community of creative and like-minded musicians who love music with timeless values, played live and for real. The sessions initially became most known for featuring noted international artists in the genres of funk, soul, blues and jazz, but more recently this has been extended to include a wider, more unbounded remit that features rock, 'Americana', singer-songwriters and more.

The intention is always to record 100% live in the studio, nodding towards the great studio bands of the ‘60s like The Funk Brothers (Motown), The Swampers (Muscle Shoals) and The Mar-Keys (Staxs). Capturing the energy and chemistry between the artist and the 'crack' studio band is at the heart of all their recordings, all videoed by film maker Leo Mansell, further reflecting the 'organic' nature of the proceedings.

So far, over 50 videos have been produced featuring artists such as Hamish Stuart (AWB, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr), Sarah Jane Morris, US Grammy award winning Mike Farris, Jo Harman, Orphy Robinson MBE, Louise Clare Marshall (Jools Holland) and many more. Masterlink aims to not only feature some of the most established and respected names in the business, but also give a platform for emerging artists who truly have the talent to perform at the required level. Its 'A&R' advisory team includes BiGiAM Artist Services and other management organisations geared to supporting credible artists with like-minded values.

The studio house band (a.k.a. the Funkestra) generally runs as a small collective of international, yet UK-based world-class musicians (with CV's to prove it - think Bowie, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Mark Ronson & more) which, at its core, comprises:

Stefan Redtenbacher (bs, producer) Mike Sturgis (drs), Karl Vanden Bossche (perc), Mike Outram/Tony Remy (gtr), Ross Stanley (keys)
