"The sound they have put down is perfect” Craig Charles, BBC Radio 2
With their dedication to what they like to refer to as “Swamp Soul” this brilliant 7 piece New Orleans Funk and Soul band bring the rhythm and soul of the Crescent City alive.
The band features the brilliant singer/guitarist Tommy Hare, the striking 6'6" vocalist who describes his life's work as "mastering the great American musical traditions of blues, rock & roll, country and soul" and the wonderful Sumudu, whose work with the likes of Rod Stewart, Jamie Cullum, Mike Lindup from Level 42 and most recently the iconic singer/songwriter Van Morrison has put her at the forefront of the UK vocal scene.
The rest of the band is equally as impressive. Drummer/Bandleader Pat Levett has appeared with Tom Jones, James Hunter, JTQ and the Ronnie Scott's All Stars, the brilliant singer/pianist Arthur Lea has a US solo recording and work with the likes of Bootleg Brass and Soweto Kinch on a massive and eclectic cv, saxophonist Ben Somers has performed with Dr John, Seal and Taylor Swift, guitarist Rob Updegraff has recently been performing and recording with Sony artist Alani and can be heard on Jamie Cullum’s latest album and bass player Spencer Brown has performed with the likes of Andy Sheppard and indie star Carl Barat. This highly impressive line-up are guaranteed to raise the roof.
"From time to time I stumble on a band that totally blows me away...The sound they have put down is perfect" Craig Charles - BBC Radio 2;
“Tommy Hare...just oozes charisma. He has already sung with members of the Rolling Stones and has a classic rock, soul, blues voice. People came and said ‘whoa, he’s a star’” GetWestLondon;
"Sumudu...is quite simply an outstanding talent...a voice like honey" BBC
‘Live at Masterlink’ was born out of the ‘Masterlink Sessions’: invited guests performing 100% live in the studio with the studio house band beautifully filmed by videographer Leo Mansell from Shoot and Splice.
Extended out from the series of popular videos the team have now expanded their offering by organising circa 20 min live-stream concerts, not only from the house band with their invited guests but also other artists and bands sharing the community values.
This is our own spin on ‘Daryl’s House’ and ‘NPR Tiny Desk Concerts’ from leafy Surrey, Great Britain.
The ‘Masterlink Sessions’ are a joint venture of Stefan Redtenbacher (Redtenbacher's Funkestra), James Welch (Masterlink Productions) and Leo Mansell (Shoot and Splice) to strengthen the community of creative and like-minded musicians who love music with timeless values, played live and for real. The sessions initially became most known for featuring noted international artists in the genres of funk, soul, blues and jazz, but more recently this has been extended to include a wider, more unbounded remit that features rock, 'Americana', singer-songwriters and more.
The intention is always to record 100% live in the studio, nodding towards the great studio bands of the ‘60s like The Funk Brothers (Motown), The Swampers (Muscle Shoals) and The Mar-Keys (Staxs). Capturing the energy and chemistry between the artist and the 'crack' studio band is at the heart of all their recordings, all videoed by film maker Leo Mansell, further reflecting the 'organic' nature of the proceedings.
So far, over 50 videos have been produced featuring artists such as Hamish Stuart (AWB, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr), Sarah Jane Morris, US Grammy award winning Mike Farris, Jo Harman, Orphy Robinson MBE, Louise Clare Marshall (Jools Holland) and many more. Masterlink aims to not only feature some of the most established and respected names in the business, but also give a platform for emerging artists who truly have the talent to perform at the required level. Its 'A&R' advisory team includes BiGiAM Artist Services and other management organisations geared to supporting credible artists with like-minded values.
The studio house band (a.k.a. the Funkestra) generally runs as a small collective of international, yet UK-based world-class musicians (with CV's to prove it - think Bowie, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Mark Ronson & more) which, at its core, comprises:
Stefan Redtenbacher (bs, producer) Mike Sturgis (drs), Karl Vanden Bossche (perc), Mike Outram/Tony Remy (gtr), Ross Stanley (keys)
